I was shocked at the frank presentation of some of the subject matter in Battle Cry. But the grandeur of man comes through in spite of it,-his capacity for heroism, his fundamental tenderness towards his fellows, his hero worship and recognition of greatness, his hattle to measure up to the best in him. He has one remarkable scene against Massey in a cameo as a stern Major General. A Novel of Berlin, which reveals the detailed work by British and American intelligence services in planning for the occupation and pacification of post WWII Germany; Trinity, an epic novel about Ireland’s struggle for independence; QB VII, a novel about the role of a Polish doctor in a German concentration camp ; and The Haj, with insights into the history of the Middle East and the secret machinations of foreigners which have led to today’s turmoil.
Lepn is, in my opinion, Leon Uris’ best book, and a must-read for those who would attempt to understand the proud, spartan ethos of the Unoted States Marine Corps.
Battle Cry does not extol the glories of war, but proves itself to be one of the greatest war stories of all time. Battle Cry is their story. It’s probably too late to address the legalities now but at the time there may well have been an infringement of the Trade Descriptions Act in a movie titled BATTLE Cry that runs two and a half hours and contains barely twenty minutes of actual combat but that’s not the same as saying it’s a bad movie, indeed, I scored it a 7 out of They meet women, become Marines and want to fight.

The story line about some of the Marines reflected just a little about the diverse nature of servicemen during the war. I know them so uirs that they are like family to me. Didn’t used to have to put that “some scenes my be objectable” stuff, the whole family could watch.
The beginning and middle of the film which focus’ on training and shipping over seas to New Zealand is first rate entertainment. I knew nothing of the movie before I watched it, but with a name like Battle Cry, I was expecting a war movie along the lines of Battleground with which ufis is paired in the double feature DVD I bought.
I enjoyed the story, the characters, the love story woven through the plot.
I never heard of “pogy bait” before or after I batle in the military. Many others appear as incoming soldiers and assorted love interests. This book is a thorough, fictionalized narrative leoj the life of a Marine, from the decisions made by brave men to enlist, all through boot camp, all through the apprehensions and graphic details of various battles in the Pacific during WWII.
Let us hope that such values also hold today.
Book seemed longer overall than necessary, with more vignettes into the personal lives and concerns of the individual characters. A terrific old movie. Oh yes, Battle Cry is in Technicolor, Cinemascope and has a few more explosions. Some of it works- Aldo Ray is surprisingly effective as big lumberjack who falls for the New Zealand gal – but for the most part this overwrought melodrama follows lesser lights like Tab Hunter.
